Facts You Must Know about Immediate Tooth Extraction

In the spheres of dentistry, everyone fears the procedure of tooth extraction, whether it is the extraction of the wisdom tooth or any other. In case of a damaged or broken tooth, due to decay, your OKC dentist may just fix the damage with a crown filling or any other treatment. However, if it is beyond repair, then the only suggestion will be tooth extraction. You will be suggested for tooth extraction only when it is absolutely necessary. The following tips will provide you extensive knowledge regarding immediate tooth extraction –

Tooth extraction is not dangerous – People often have a misconception when it comes to tooth extraction. They think of it as a dangerous dental procedure but if you do not fix the problem, it might aggravate your dental conditions and worsen the pain. It is not dangerous because dentists apply local anesthesia and use sophisticated tools to make the dental procedure as quick and pain-free as possible. To protect your gums and infected or decayed tooth, the best and easy option is to go for tooth extraction.

Preparation is necessary – First, the dentist will take an X-ray of the damaged areas to analyze and decide how he can remove the damaged tooth. All you have to do is provide all the necessary details about any medications you take and your medical history if any. If your damaged tooth is the wisdom tooth, then you will require the panoramic X-ray.

Maintain dental and oral hygiene – Maintaining healthy oral hygiene is extremely essential if you are planning to go for tooth extraction. All you need to do is gently brush your gum and teeth a night before the dental surgery and once before the extraction. Do not meddle with the damaged or surgical areas. Rinse your mouth with salt water or mouthwash, 24 hours post-surgery, only if the bleeding stops or reduces. You can mouthwash at least 2 to 3 times per day after every meal.

Do not smoke – Cigarettes are made up of a number of chemicals other than nicotine which can prove to be detrimental to oral health or hygiene. Cigarettes also contain staining properties that can stain your tooth. Smoking can increase the risk of tooth decay and infection and it should be strictly avoided before your tooth extraction and at least a week after the surgery.

Check for swelling – It is quite normal to feel uneasy and discomfort after a tooth extraction surgery. You can treat this by applying ice cubes externally after every 30 minutes, post-surgery. This will reduce any swelling or bruising. If your tooth hurts excessively, just before the tooth extraction, the dentist may advise you to press moist, warm cotton instead of ice.

Take care of bleeding – If you bleed after your tooth surgery, place a gauze pad on the surgical areas for at least 30 minutes. You can also use a moist tea-bag for 30 minutes, to calm the pain. Tea contains tannic acid and closes the blood vessels, and helps your blood to clot quickly around the surgical tooth.
